STEEL
CYCLES: A FULL-CIRCLE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
ROSCOE's
Totally Cycled World integrates Science, Math, Language Arts and Social
Studies through the exploration of the theme-CYCLES. Some points explored
under this theme are natural cycles, economic cycles and the stages of
the recycling process.
The four
major lessons: math, social studies, language arts and science are as
follows:
- Math:
Characters ROSCOE and his friend from outer space, Eon, explore mathematical
concepts by discussing and working calculations about Eon's trip to
Earth and the development and mathematic foundations of Earth's time
keeping systems.
- Social
Studies: Characters ROSCOE and Eon encourage students to help them
develop a solid waste management plan for ROSCOE's home town, Pleasantville.
Students not only learn about the many aspects of solid waste management,
but practice data-gathering skills and information assessment.
- Language
Arts:
A folk tale is developed to educate students on the value of verbal
communication, the use of stories as entertainment and education, and
the function and value of seasonal cycles. Students then are sent on
a mission that requires them to re-assemble a story to further develop
natural sequencing and grammatical skills.
- Science:
ROSCOE's friend IGOR helps the students identify organics and inorganics
in the waste stream and determine recyclability. This lesson has four
learning centers, each of which focuses on an individual natural cycle.
The CD also
includes one recycling-specific activity that helps the learner understand
the interdependent processes of consumption, recycling and steelmaking.
In this activity, students "build" a schematic of the recycling process
by correctly answering questions. Their effort is rewarded by an animated
view of the steelmaking process.
Special
Features: The program contains controlled vocabulary and on-line glossary;
missions/lessons that can be replayed by students to reinforce their knowledge
and re-test their skills; printed synopsis of the lessons; fun facts and
supporting data; a periodic review of material presented in lessons; and
tracking devices for teacher use, including on-screen or printed reports
showing student success rates when answering questions.
